Laura and Travis’s engagement

It’s safe to say that I liked Laura and Travis from the moment I met them — they’re just good people. And you know when people in love are described as having a sparkle in their eye? Yeah, they’ve got that sparkle.  It’s pretty awesome.

These two met and fell in love as undergrads at Southwestern University (where they’ll be getting married), and Travis proposed to Laura at Southwestern, so it was only fitting that we shot their engagement session at their alma mater.  I was so glad we were able to track down one of those famous Southwestern communal bikes (in spite of the fact that school’s out for summer) for a few shots!  Too much fun!

Thanks for the good times, y’all.  And for putting up with my ridiculous Randy Jackson impression.  Can’t wait for your wedding next March!

Hail, hail.

It seems to me that most people you encounter in this world love Austin, Texas.  They’re probably pretty vocal about it.  It may seem obnoxious at first — that they don’t have one bad thing to say about this town.  And you start to wonder, is this place Shangri-la or something?

Well, one of Austin’s dirty little secrets, I suppose, is that magical time in the spring when enormous chunks of ice fall out of the sky.

This bad boy is one of the many aformentioned chunks of ice (aka hail) that peppered my front lawn this afternoon.  Daaang.

Now, I know what you’re thinking.  And the answer is: no, I’ve never thought about being a hand model.

These difficult economic times

I admit it…  I have an unnatural fascination with the economic turmoil that is happening in the world today.  I follow the companies that file for bankruptcy or ask for bailout money like some guys follow their favorite football teams.  The NBC Nightly News and NPR are like my SportsCenter.

Don’t get me wrong, it sucks.   Times are lean.   I hate that people are losing their jobs, that house prices are falling, and that my little IRA just got a little littler.  But still, I find the whole spectacle of this recession oddly captivating.  Is there something wrong with me?

Did you hear that Wolf Camera filed for bankruptcy last week?  While that doesn’t necessarily mean that they will be going out of business, it does seem like it’s inevitable.  Another casualty of the recession.

If Wolf does indeed go belly up, I can’t say that I’ll miss them all that much.

Sofie’s studio session (finally)

When winter rears it’s ugly head in Texas, sometimes it’s just best to move indoors. (Not today. It’s 85 degrees and sunny outside. Go figure!) So when it was cold (back in November), I did some studio work with the lovely Sofia and the super-talented makeup artist Dee Azlan.  I’ve been kicking myself because I never got around to posting these.  Well, here are the results from Sofie’s studio session, straight out of “the vault”. Enjoy!

ps — I’m currently booking February photo sessions. If you’d like to play, contact me.

Walking in Memphis… with Stuart (sneak peek)

Taking a quick break from editing to post these shots from Stuart’s senior session last Sunday.  We had a great time bumming around downtown Memphis, TN and shooting some rockin’ not-your-typical-senior-portraits portraits.  While we never made it to Beale Street, the South Main neighborhood turned out to be pretty cool too. Look for more images of Stuart soon…

The Return of Adult Skate Night

Every Tuesday night, Playland Skate Center has an Adult Skate Night.  And usually once a year, Jessica and I find it’s our civic duty to round up a group of work friends to relieve some tension and relive a little of the glory days in smelly rental skates.  There may have been some sore muscles (sad, I know…) and bruises, but I think a good time was had by all.

Next time, I’m dropping a few extra bucks to get the speed skates. Cheers!

Tammy and Chris – a preview

Tammy and Chris had a gorgeous laid-back-South-Austin-style ceremony at Mercury Hall last Saturday.  After all the chaos of the formals was over and every last person booked it out of there to join the reception already in progress, the bride and groom took a moment to just be, and to take in the fact that they’re married. What a beautiful moment! What a fantastic couple! I’m still pouring through the images I took on their big day (second shooting for my friend Sherry of Sherry Hammonds Photography), but these were too good to pass up… just wanted to “share the love”…

Shelly and Matt – down by the river (6/9/2008)

My pal Sherry and I drove way down to New Braunfels (at one point I could have sworn I heard some dueling banjo’s) to shoot Shelly and Matt’s wedding (I was second shooting for Sherry of Sherry Hammonds Photography).  It was at the Hideout on the Horseshoe, which is an absolutely beautiful venue to get married at!  I was a little worried at first, because when we arrived, there were hundreds of drunken tubers floating by on the river… but as the afternoon gave way to dusk, the aforementioned hammered tubers disappeared and Shelly and Matt were wed in a riverside ceremony. In flip flops!  What an awesome, fun, laidback, cool couple!  And their wedding had a lot of cool personal touches (guests were greeted with a mojito-powered cocktail hour, the bride and groom made their getaway on a raft at the end of the night — just to name a few things). It’s always such an honor to be there on someone’s wedding day. Double bonus when the party rocks! Thanks for all the good times, you two. Hope you had a blast in Martha’s Vinyard.

Elisha

So I have a blog-tastic backlog of people and images I have yet to write about (let’s see.. two weddings and several shoots, who’s counting anyway?), but I couldn’t resist posting just one of the many images Elisha and I came away with during her portrait session last Friday.

Elisha hails from San Antonio, is a mom, model and actress. In a word, she’s cool. She wanted some updated images to show off her new do and to capture her lively personality. Check, and check.

There’s more photos to come, but enjoy this one for now. Thanks for making the trip from SA and for sweating your butt off with me, Elisha! You did a terrific job!
